A Little Shabby Rose Quilt

Well, I surprised myself that I was able to move the sawhorses, paint cans and boxes of junk to make a path to my sewing machine and find all the fabric, and my rotary cutter so I could get this done.

I made a sofa size rag quilt throw from these fabrics last year and took it to the Holiday Show I did with Di. It didn't sell at the show but I sold it later online and it has been one of my best selling rag quilt kits ever. So I got a call a while back from a lady who had seen the quilt at the show and tracked me down online but she doesn't sew, so she was looking for a finished quilt. Of course I agreed to make it for her, and of course that was right when I was starting on my redecorating project. (which I expected was going to take about a week or two) But no worries, she said she didn't need it until November and that seemed a long way off at that time, to me anyway.

It was in the back of my mind that I needed to get started on it. I have been meaning to go look for one of those Procrastinators Anonymous Calenders, but I just haven't gotten around to that yet.

The original quilt had a sage green chenille in it which I can't find anymore. So I had to sub some other fabrics in the baby quilt kits. I had never actually made one from the fabrics in the kit, so it was kind of fun to see how it turned out. I think the green damask is pretty. And there is a pink minky with embossed roses that I added too. They don't really show up in the picture.

I am such a shmuck, I always feel bad when I have too much going on and can't wiggle my nose and whip out orders instantly. And then I worry that my customer might get a bad impression of my business. So I often feel the need to add a little something extra to make up for my guilt. And who doesn't love a little freebie gift?

So I took some of my scraps and made this adorable little burp cloth.

And made it into a little cupcake to go with the quilt.

So she was very happy with the quilt and the cute little cupcake. And I am happy to get back to my regularly scheduled chaos.

  2. I love the colors and textures in this quilt! How do you get your raggedy edges to turn out so fluffy? When I make rag quilts, the raggedy edges are kind of flat. I love your blog, by the way. Can't wait to see how your room turns out! :)

I have never seen anything like this quilt. Do you have a tutorial somewhere? Is that chenille in between the squares? It's just as cute as can be!

  8. I just popped in from Funky Junk Interiors. Wow! Way too pretty to be called a "rag" quilt. Without a doubt, this is one of the fluffiest I have ever seen. Great Job! Loved the little cupcake idea as well. I know your customer must have been tickled pink when she received it.

  9. I LOVE, LOVE, your quilt!!!! I made my first one a few months ago and it didn't turn out nearly as nice as yours. What is the secret for fluffy seams?? Also, when you sew the X on each block, do you sew corner to corner or leave a1/4" space. What do you use for the center material? Sorry for all the questions, but I have another grandchild due and I want to make another one. My intersections seemed thick and knotty. I appreciate any help you can give.

  10. Thanks for all the sweet comments. I use a flannel center square, and take a 5/8" seam allowance, try to clip no less than 1/4" apart. I do try to clip well into the intersections too. I stitch the blocks all the way corner to corner, as I don't see that would make any difference. I have a tutorial for a super fast receiving blanket rag quilt, find the link on my sidebar. Enjoy! doni
